Reviews are very positive. The standard military .45 ACP load is a 230-grain FMJ bullet travelling downrange at roughly 850 feet per second. The most recent “retro” 1911 I reviewed was Colt’s 1911 Classic in these pages last year. Ivan, did you see the sunrise this morning? The gun looks right out of a vintage 1940s photo and clocked in briefly at a local Veteran’s Day event with a local group of WWII reenactors. Auto Ordnance 1911 A1 5 .45 ACP 45TH President Trump Pistol. Despite what feckless Millennials might think, this gun is not too big and heavy to be carried, either openly or concealed. The 1911 BKO, by Auto-Ordnance, is an 80-series GI 45 that looks good on the outside and still clocks in for work at the range. The company machines the slide, sear, and disconnector from solid carbon bar stock, then heat treats them “to assure durability and long life over many thousands of rounds.” As with the old-school GI guns, the Auto-Ordnance pistol has a low-profile blade front sight and a rear sight, with the latter being drift adjustable for windage. Take a look at the Kahr-Auto Ordnance BKO. All Firearms News subscribers now have digital access to their magazine content. The 45 ACP cartridge has some serious recoil and the weight of this pistol helps to absorb it. If something gets wedged in the trigger guard of a Glock/XD-M/M&P etc., they’ll go bang. The grip safety physically blocks the trigger from being pulled. Discover how this pistol survives the wear and tear of the trail after a year of heavy use. For the M1911A1 several small external changes were made to make the pistol easier to shoot and accommodate shooters with smaller hands. James Tarr is a longtime contributor to Firearms News and other firearms publications. However, Auto-Ordnance was wise not to use an original pattern magazine. Back in the day, nobody had even heard of “cocked-and-locked” carry, where the pistol was carried with the hammer cocked and the thumb safety engaged. One of Federal Premium's newer self-defense offerings is the Punch series of loads designed to perform well and expand, even at lower velocities. The addition of the safety allows this pistol to be sold in certain states which have more restrictive laws, but that doesn’t mean I have to like it. The Nighthawk Custom Vice President is an outstanding example of what a 1911 can be. With a 1911, even though it has that scary cocked hammer, unless both the thumb safety and grip safety are deactivated, pulling that trigger does nothing. There's a reason for this. The R1 review indicates that it is a nice value 1911…..but it’s virtually identical to several other 1911s on the market. Since 1999, the Kahr Firearms Group has included the AO brand in its portfolio, with production at the company’s current Worcester, Mass facility. Glock Hiking: 500+ Miles With the Glock 19. It is hard to find even a modern pistol chambered in 45 ACP that is narrower than the 1911, whose nickname was “Ol’ Slabsides,” for as big and heavy as the five inch-barreled, all steel pistol is, it is still flat enough to conceal under a thin shirt. Now, while this pistol lends itself more to open carry, with a good holster and a solid belt for a foundation it is certainly possible to carry this pistol concealed with the right choice of covering garments, provided you have a body size and shape that is conducive to this. Jeff Cooper seemed to prefer to open carry his 1911 in a Yaqui Slide, and this simple holster tucks the butt of the gun in tight enough that it pretty much disappears under any covering garment. Auto Ordnance Custom Case Hardened 1911. To see how the gun performed with a wide range of magazines– and because the gun only ships with a single CheckMate 1911 single-stack– we threw in some Sarco specials, a few GI surplus mags, and a couple of Novak and CMC mags to liven things up. While designed by John Moses Browning specifically for the military, this pistol was available for sale to the public at least as early as 1912. When it comes to accuracy, the gun was more than adequate for a classicly-styled Government Issue. Trailer for an upcoming article on Firearms News. Length: 8.5″ Safeties: Thumb safety, grip safety, firing pin block Sights: Blade front, rear drift adjustable for windage Magazine: One 7-round Grips: Checkered Wood Grips with U.S. This 5″ pistol is made in Massachusetts and available for a very reasonable price, making it an ideal candidate for a first time customization (no sense butchering a Colt if you are learning). The Hornady Kestrel 5700 combines complete onsite environmental measurements with Hornady 4DOF trajectory solutions. The included seven-round magazine was manufactured by Checkmate, and features a modern improved non-tilt follower and a very robust spring. My plan was to bring some solid aftermarket magazines to the range as well as the provided seven-round magazine, just in case, because reliability issues with 1911s, as with most pistols, can often be traced to the magazine. Patrick Sweeney tests the Cimarron Bad Boy 10mm Single-Action Cowboy-style revolver. But is one better than the other? There is a certain old-school cool attached to a longslide. Their 1911 BKO longslide is an ode to the famous M1911A1 line used by the U.S. military from 1926 to the last days of the Cold War. If you want an authentic period holster you’re going to be looking for something big, and leather, with a flap that covers the gun. This standard magazine is included with the … Want to hit a target in the dark? I was also able, and willing, to dress around the gun. Practiced with it often until 2012. They’re both fantastic guns. Technically, no. After heading to the range, I considered deleting my above comment about bringing extra after-market magazines. According to Auto Ordnance the pistol’s frame is cast while the slide is barstock and the barrel is a one-piece item. The Auto-Ordnance incorporates GI specs, with a standard 5-inch barrel and an 8.5-inch overall length. There were no other problems across the magazines or ammo in the course of 600 rounds fired, and no jam experiences with the factory-included mag. Both the feed ramp angle and its position in relationship to the barrel mouth (with the slide back and the swinging barrel forward) looked textbook perfect to my eye. If John Browning’s design of the 1911 was so great, some of you might be thinking, why do all the modern 1911s have different controls such as extended thumb safeties and beavertail grip safeties. Over the century of its existence and use there have been untold variations of this pistol, but while John Browning was alive there were really only two, the M1911 and the M1911A1. The first is that they are very size efficient; they are exactly as large as they need to be, and no larger. The rear and front sights did well till the sun rose up higher to my back side. are all making the Model T with different brand badges. June 01, 2020 By James Tarr With the pistol, you get a cable lock as well as a cardboard box with a foam cut out for the pistol. Very comfortable, and performed well in one IPSC comp, and won a shoot at my club '06. It is not an exact copy, however. That’s the purpose of a handgun. Better than a pointy stick, for sure. It is close to the original pistols with a few changes made to revisit the design. (All Photos: Chris Eger/Guns.com). Both malfunctions were a failure to feed the 7th round fully into the chamber, a textbook case of a weakened magazine spring– in other words, not a gun issue. Let’s do a little “perception versus reality.” That big cocked hammer scares a lot of people, but the truth is that the 1911 with its hammer cocked and safeties engaged is much more immune to accidents and mishandling than the standard striker-fired pistol design. When it comes to American-made “GI .45″s in the $500 range, the Auto-Ordnance M1911A1 delivered at the range. Of course, the company that kicked the whole thing off over 100 years ago is still cranking out Mr. Browning’s classic. I am having the finish redone so that it will not destroy the steel. This wasn’t done just to improve ejection of spent cases but to allow the better ejection of live rounds (such as when clearing a jam), as the original ejection port can be a little tight. The nickname for them was “hump and a bump” sights, and be aware that the front sight as seen here has been widened over the even smaller one on the original M1911. I carried a full size all steel five-inch Government Model-style 1911 every day for over a decade. He is also the author of several books, including Carnivore, which was featured on The O’Reilly Factor. What happens when you take the Glock 19 out for more than 500 miles of hiking? Phil Masters Until I purchased my Auto Ordnance 1911PKZ last September I had never owned a center fire pistol. model chambered for .45 ACP with a 5″ barrel. No one has ever said an M1911 wasn’t fun to shoot. If you still want to comment on this photo, lighten up.*. With that in mind this pistol detail strips as any other Series 80 equipped Government Model (though notice the extra long firing pin spring). Firing pin safeties like this are notorious for screwing up what is otherwise known as the best trigger pull found in a fighting handgun. Admittedly, I limited my ammo choices to FMJ and hollowpoints that have FMJ-type profiles, but the gun fed and fired everything. Get the... Because we all know that guy who keeps loose assorted rounds of mixed ancestry in a coffee can for his “Fuddy-Five.”. The preferred mode of carry for that crowd was cocked-and-locked, and shooting style became two-handed (initially the Weaver stance). Auto Ordnance 1911 BKO Review March 10, 2016 By Joel J Hutchcroft Auto Ordnance's GI-style Model 1911 BKO is a serviceable.45 ACP pistol with an extremely attractive price. Now they’re expanding the range to include a government-size 9mm model with an affordable MSRP of $673. When I opened the pistol up I was very happy to see that the frame ramp had been polished and properly adjusted for angle, and the mouth of the barrel had been polished and opened up a bit as well. Shooting the Auto Ordnance 1911 is like riding a time machine and it takes you back in time where WWII is at its peak. As rifles go this one is small, thin, and light, but it does everything you need it to do, and the truth of that is shown by the success of that rifle, which is still being made to this day. Besides the $1,300 Gold Cup National Match and $1,700 M45A1 rail gun, Colt offers what they term the 1911 Classic, a 70 Series gun that comes standard with a national match barrel and is offered in choices of either .45 or 38 Super and with a blued or stainless steel finish. This pistol was surprisingly accurate, and I probably could have done better groups if I wasn’t saddled with a seven-pound trigger pull. Weight is 39-ounces, unloaded, on par for other clones of John Moses Browning’s “Two World War Winner.” This translates into a gun that is easily held on target if using a proper grip with minimal recoil for follow-up shots. OUT OF STOCK (1) AUTO ORDNANCE 1911 .45 ACP 5 7RD. Naturally, there is not a mag disconnect, an often detested feature found on many of today’s 1911-22s. And when you raise them and point them the sights seem to naturally be aimed at the target. Afterward, the downright filthy 1911 BKO was cleaned and inspected, showing normal wear on the metal-on-metal surfaces but no cracks or breakages. The result: two jams on a rusty ASSY-marked GI mag of Vietnam issue, both on the last round in the magazine. The frame itself is only three-quarters of an inch thick, and the slide is just an inch thick. Originally, this concept was shown at SHOT Show in Las Vegas, but now Auto Ordnance is beginning to pump these out into the market. {Related: What are the Best 1911 Magazines? It’s not that you can’t carry it concealed, it is that most people do not want to. Col. Jeff Cooper first spotted this minimalist belt holster when working in Central and South America after World War II, and brought the design to America in the mid-1950s. Two weeks later, I had a sample in hand. The modern improvements to those safeties reflect a change of status for the pistol, and shooting style, more than they do anything else. And keep muzzle rise down. In the past, I’ve fired retro versions of the 1911 like this out to 50 yards and beyond. Excuse me, but the 1911 was actually designed to be carried. This Kahr-built Auto-Ordnance uses the Colt Series 80 firing pin safety. Of all of the “retro” versions of 1911s I’ve tested over the years, many in these pages, Auto-Ordnance’s 1911A1 is the closest in specs to the original M1911A1 that I’ve seen. The magazine well opening on this pistol is very slightly beveled. If the hammer is down you will not be able to activate the manual thumb safety on the left side of the frame. Several reviews list it as same as the Inland offering with slightly different roll marks. Cooper’s “Modern Technique of the Pistol” involved shooting the 1911 with a “thumb-high grip,” where the strong-hand thumb rode atop the thumb safety while shooting to keep it from accidentally getting bumped up while firing. The grip safety is the pivoting lever underneath the web of your hand, and taking a firing grip on the pistol is all you need to do to deactivate it. Most people don’t want their carry gun to inconvenience them, which is why we have so many small, light, polymer framed micro 9mms on the market these days. The carbon steel slide, sear, and disconnector are machined from solid bar stock, then heat treated properly to assure durability and long life over many thousands of rounds. The “BKO” means a black oxide finish on the frame, barrel, and slide. This pistol was meant to be carried by officers (who generally don’t need a rifle) or cavalry troopers (who needed a weapon they could fire with one hand, the reins of their horse in the other). With an empty magazine in place this all steel pistol weighs 39 ounces. This is designed as a military firearm, and the thinking was if you actually had to fire a handgun in combat the enemy would be so close sights would perhaps be a bit superfluous. My first 1911 was a Smith and Wesson SW1911 in 2004, nice crisp trigger, satin Chrome finish, three dot sites. {Related: See How the AO 1911 BKO Compares Directly to Vintage M1911A1s, Gun Range Review: U.S. Made Auto-Ordnance M1911A1. The only real difference between the Auto-Ordnance and an original 1911A1 is that the AO is equipped with a firing pin safety, and I’m sad to see it, although I understand why it is there. I never used them, because I never needed them, the provided Checkmate magazine worked just fine. Well, for those wanting a retro .45 that doesn’t break the bank or say “Made in the Philippines” or “Made in Turkey” on it, the Auto-Ordnance is a no-brainer. Most modern iterations of the 1911 in silhouette more closely resemble the original M1911, not the M1911A1 introduced in 1924, which is the version issued to our troops in World War II. As part of the 1st Marine Division in 1944, the legendary Col. Walter Walsh did just that following the invasion of Okinawa, Japan. The same could be argued to be true about the 1911. The single-action trigger was vintage 1911 in the respect that it was kinda gritty and broke at about 7.25-pounds. The Auto-Ordnance 1911BKO frame incorporates GI specs, and features a matte black finished frame, barrel, and slide. I am not sure whether this was the case on the original M1911A1s but even that little bit of beveling will aid you when it comes time to reload. That means that unless the hammer is cocked, this pistol will not fire and is just a very expensive (though stylish) paperweight. The trigger is kinda heavy but it breaks clean and the recoil is moderate. This pistol is supplied with one seven-round magazine, or one nine-round magazine if you choose to commit heresy and buy the 9mm version. In size and weight, it mimics not the original M1911 adopted by the military in that year, but rather the M1911A1 from 1924, which served our troops so well through World War II, Korea, in Vietnam — more on the difference between the two in a bit. Shooting the Auto Ordnance WWII Parkerized is like stepping back in time. The only question is whether or not you’ll actually see the sights while you’re doing that. The slide, sear, and disconnector of this pistol, the three parts where steel quality is arguably the most important, are machined from solid bar stock. If you want a somewhat retro holster that also works for carry, concealed and otherwise, check out the Yaqui Slide, now made by Galco Gunleather. Review: Auto Ordnance 1911 BKO Semi-Auto Pistol Pat Cascio 08.10.16 When I received a press release on the Auto Ordnance 1911 BKO model (advertised as a “mil-spec” 1911), I placed an order. This base model gun has a suggested retail price of $695, and as I said, of all the retro models I’ve tested, this Auto-Ordnance 1911A1 comes closest to the original guns. The 1911 has the trigger pull against which all other firearms are judged, and for good reason. Once you slap grips on the gun it is but an inch and a quarter thick at the grips. The thumb safety physically blocks the hammer from falling when engaged. They are offered in .45 ACP and 9mm. 1911 pistol. Auto Ordnance 1911A1 Review Conclusion. 1911s are fun old guns that still work great, but it’s as if Ford, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Hyundai, etc. These sights work, however they are a bit small and because they are all black, in any kind of complicated lighting environment or under speed they kind of disappear, and you will find yourself aiming the pistol by just looking over the top of it. Internally, you have much as you would expect on a modern M1911. It is a fair representation in almost every way.The frame and slide are machined from steel castings and fit for reliability and not match-grade accuracy. *Away from the range with an unloaded gun, of course, and watch that muzzle. The original thumb safety was deemed by most users a little too small for comfort and so wider and longer versions were created to ensure positive deactivation by the shooter’s strong-hand thumb during the drawstroke. I did this as a police officer, armored car driver, and private investigator, but I didn’t just carry at work, I carried all day every day, and I carried two spare magazines on my off-side. Close enough for Government work, they say. AW Custom just announced the release of three custom 1911s which are official licensed by Auto Ordnance. Virginia Republican Rep.
